Nine PARA surrealists from Estonia. A group that wanted to stand a little beside the French mainstay of surrealism. The group was founded in 1989 by the artist Ilmar Malin PARA -89, himself one of the participants in the art gallery’s exhibition. All of the participating artists lived and worked in Estonia.
Pia Thunholm writes “They have certain positions in common with surrealism, namely the desire to free man from his shackles. It manifests itself in their works of art as timeless, lyrical and emotional images with underlying layers of mystery, horror and wonder. ”. The group published a manifesto in which they, among other things, writes that the artist’s “task and obligation is to be able to see in the dark”. From there also came the title of the exhibition, Gloomy crystals.
