How do we deal with something that is – so that it becomes something? The world will change. How can we take on that perspective, even to create something more of it?

Tobias Sjöberg works with painting, drawing and form. Image – regardless of expression. Bild (Swedish word for image) is both becoming and forming, from the German word bildung (something can become). Ellen Key talks about education being what remains after we forget everything we’ve learned. Sjöberg likes to use materials that are alive, that can change and change shape. Watercolor has something of its own, it dissolves, and can change character depending on how it is used in the creation itself, but also depending on how it is presented and in what light it is then received.

The place of inspiration for this work is the Skillebyholm – place for biodynamic cultivation in Hölö outside Södertälje. In cultivation, it is clear what we develop from, a strong inspiration for artistry. Cultivation means culture and agriculture means spiritual cultivation. Through actions, inner values can be evoked, self-cultivation. We need to rethink our way of life, it is a reminder that there is something to be found in each of us – that makes a difference. The earth touches us all, we cannot separate ourselves from the earth.

Eyelander is a project that brings together artists in Stockholm in a discussion about cultural heritage and climate change. On the one hand it is a digital exhibition that spreads over 10 municipalities in Stockholm through 10 site-specific artistic interventions, on the other hand it is a forum for discussions about cultural heritage, the climate and digital tools in art. The project aims to explore what happens to our common cultural heritage as we face potentially disruptive climate change. Through the power of art, we want to create new meeting spaces for conversation and encourage all those who take part in the project to get involved locally and regionally in cultural heritage issues.

Södertälje konsthall has invited Tobias Sjöberg to participate in Eyelander. The exhibition is a part of this.

Tobias Sjöberg, born in 1979, is educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Goldsmiths in London and the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm. His work touches on recurring questions about our contemporary worldview perspectives. How do we shape and reshape our worldview based on what is completely self-perceived? Sjöberg works with painting, often with watercolor.
