Södertälje konstnärskrets “Kretsen” was formed in 1956 under the leadership of Uno Karlsson as its first chairman. It is still a highly active association with almost 80 members who run their own “Gallery Kretsen” at Orionkullen in Södertälje.
Södertälje konstnärskrets 15 years was shown at the same time as the exhibition Centralheating in Södertälje. It was during a period when it was common to host small local exhibitions with information about different important subjects at the same time as international initiatives such as Romans – 36 by Italy’s leading artists in May – June 1972.
Of the 24 exhibiting members, most have passed away today. An exhibition with the charming Hans Polmar and Martin Lidström – retrospectively was shown separately in 1986 at Södertälje konsthall (more info in the web-archive). Stig Thidermann, the world traveler, was involved from the circle’s start in 1956. A retrospective exhibition of his work was shown the year before. (see separate text). Another member, Thorsten Thunberg, was Kretsens first chairman for nearly fifteen years. His paintings and drawings were shown the same autumn at Södertälje konsthall (see web-archive-text 1972). Bosse Perman and Ulf Ingwall (see separate text from 1974) belonged to the younger generation in the group. They both had a studio at the same time at Saltskog Gård until their deaths. The textile artist Britta Penje was also one of those who was involved from the start, she had an active part in founding the Salskog Gård foundation. She lived and worked actively on Saltskog Gård until her death in 2019. Her cabinet, which is similar to a time assembly, has been much appreciated by the Södertälje audience over the years.
Helga Henschen and Bengt Nordqvist were some of those in the group who received the most attention from a time perspective. Helga lived at this time 1967 -76 in an artistic collective in Turinge church school in Nykvarn outside Södertälje. In Lunagallerian you can see her large ceramic sculpture fountain Dafne which was built for the place in 1978 (see separate text on public art). Helga Henschen – a memorial exhibition was shown in a large separate exhibition at Södertälje konsthall in 2003. (see separate text).
Bengt Nordqvist from Borås was a visual artist and musician. He moved to Södertälje in 1959 and built up the violin teaching in the music school. In 1979, a large retrospective exhibition was shown at Södertälje konsthall with 231 of his works. Bengt Nordqvist – painting, assembly, drawing 1946 – 79.
