Helena Hertov, design curator writes in the preface “For the participants in the exhibition Staged Fashion-Designed identities, stage costumes are taken very seriously. They are not only a nice surface to look at but also a tool for the artists when they go into their stage role. A good stage costume helps them to be filled with the energy required to make a successful performance. Usually the focus is on the artists and their music. Here, instead, we go behind the scenes to take a closer look at the stage clothing’s creation process and its designers. ”.

The exhibition is produced by Falkenbergs museum and contains 25 original costumes as well as unique material that tells about the work process of producing the costumes. Usually the focus is on the artists and their music. Here we instead take a closer look at the stage clothes, the creation process and the designers. What do the artists and costume designers want to convey and what function does the stage costume really have?

For the participants in the exhibition Staged Fashion – Designed Identities, stage costumes are taken very seriously. They are not only a nice surface to look at, but also a tool that helps the artist enter his stage role.

– For me, the scene is like an electric magic field. It could just as easily be a burning fire, it’s about the same feeling. Then you can not get on stage in jeans, says Paulina Wallenberg-Olsson.

The costume can also mean an increase in the quality of the music – We have tried to record an A- and a B-track and it sounds better if we are dressed in a suit than if we have a t-shirt and gym shoes. You get a little more stretched in a suit and you can hear it, says singer Pelle Almqvist in The Hives. In the design of the stage clothes, we also find positions regarding identity and aesthetics. A desire to counteract norms and events in society.
