One evening, a handful of photos are sent between two places and persons. Both are aware of what these places have to offer and has a strong relationship to them. At first, the recipient does not understand what it is about, but soon notices that the pictures tells something and that the message is addressed specifically to him. He realizes that there are no alternatives but to answer, and a full-scale correspondence is soon underway.
Diaspora Letters is a visual conversation between photographers and artists Nicolás Wormull b. 1977, based in Chile, and Ricard Estay b. 1985, based in Stockholm, Sweden.
The conversation began in connection with the protests in Chile in 2019 completely without words, where the pictures they sent to each other were allowed to speak. In two parallel diaries that are democratically collected in Diaspora Letters, the spectator gets to take part in a fever dream-like journey.
An intimate micro-macro dialogue that has probably lasted longer than the work extends. Seemingly longer than the two knew each other. Maybe even for generations. From one diaspora to another.
This exhibition is an insight into how the conversation has gone during the two years that these individuals had a conversation. What were they really talking about? And what does the conversation say about the two worlds during this time?
